Design, Build and Display

Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 looks amazing, specially if you love slim smartphones. It is slimmer and lighter than anything you have seen before and looks quite premium. The basics are same as almost all smartphones aiming for the slimmest of slim title tag. There is light aluminum metal frame running around the edges, thin gorilla glass on the rear, thin gorilla glass on the front and thin Amoled screen dominating most of the front side.

Hardware keys give good feedback and both MicroUSB port and Audio jack are positioned on the bottom edge. The Amoled display has great contrast and blacks, but has those predominant blue Amoled tones which make whites less lucid. The 720p HD resolution didn’t feel lackluster on the AMOLED display. We think the display quality will suffice for the price.

Processor and RAM

Micromax has used Snapdragon 410 quad core chip to power Sliver 5. The problem is that Snapdragon 410 is the low end processor, which you can score in phones selling for as low as 5999 INR and on the other hand, competitors like Xiaomi are offering much better Snapdragon 801 for lesser. 64 bit is the current trend, and octa core 64 bit chips like MT6752 or Snapdragon 615 could have resulted in overheating, because of slim profile. All said and done, this is a limitation and will limit Sliver 5 to basic users.

Camera and Internal Storage

Micromax has used an 8 MP Sony IMX219 stacked sensor, to avoid camera bumps. The stacked sensor is power efficient and has a blue light filter on top. In our initial testing, we liked the camera performance of both front and rear camera, but again you can get better at this price. Both front and rear camera have pro mode so you can tweak all aspects to an extent.

Internal storage is 16 GB out of which 11.43 GB is available at user end. We couldn’t test if USB OTG is supported. MicroSD card slot for further expansion is not present, so you will have to remain content with 11.43 GB storage. Easier said than done.

User Interface and Battery

Canvas Sliver 5 is running Android 5.0.2 Lollipop with light customization and several preloaded apps. We will have to spend more time with the device before we decide we like it or not, but things look good for now.

Battery capacity is 2000 mAh, and Micromax claims this is good enough for one day of moderate to heavy usage. Again, we will have to spend some more time with the device to know how much beating the battery can take.

Conclusion

Micromax Canvas Sliver 2 looks good, will be perceived as overpriced at 17,999 INR. Snapdragon 410, limited storage and an 8 MP camera is not a compromise many will be willing to make at 18K. However, time and again we have seen slim phones do well in India, and if you are wooed by slim phones, this is a worthy consideration. Besides, door step after sales service with guarantee of resolving every issue within 7 days is something which we appreciate and which makes the high price justified to an extent.
